I was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. I graduated from Sir Winston Churchill Secondary in 1984, then obtained my Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Political Science from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 1988 and my Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from UBC in 1993.
I worked on my first Workers’ Compensation Board (now WorkSafeBC) cases as an Articled Student in 1992 and have specialized in WorkSafeBC cases since 1993. Over this time, I have represented over 4,000 clients. I have been qualified as an expert witness and have provided expert evidence for other lawyers at the Supreme Court of British Columbia.
I have been asked many times, “Why did you decide to specialize in workers’ compensation law?” I think that my personal and family background led to a natural progression into this area of law.
Starting in the 1960’s, my family ran a successful construction company in the Lower Mainland. The company provided water, sanitary, sewer, excavation, and site services for municipalities, towns, and countless new sub-divisions. Growing up, I was fortunate to be able to work for the family business both in the office, and on-site (including general labour and, later, operating heavy equipment, such as bulldozers, backhoes, and excavators). This hands-on experience gave me an appreciation and unique insight into the hard work of our valued company employees.
The law practice of Gosal & Company was incorporated in 1998 and has grown steadily to meet the needs of British Columbia’s injured workers. From a humble start as a sole practitioner, Gosal & Company has a devoted, hard-working team of myself and 3 to 4 associates, and 10 additional team members (including Articled and Law Students).
So, to answer the question, I do workers’ compensation law because my background and education provided me with the skills, knowledge, and a unique insight to appreciate the plight of injured workers.
